(May. 02, 2008) On April 15, 2008, the Lebanese government asserted that the arrest of four high-ranking military officers in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is legal under Lebanese and international law. The assertion came in response to criticism of the government by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights that called for the release of the detainees, describing their arrest without charge since August 2005 as "arbitrary" and "unjust."
